On March 1, 2024, the Museum of Appalachia will present the third annual Heroes of Southern Appalachia Dinner & Awards Ceremony–live from the Museum grounds.
This year's recipient is the late Alex Haley. Special Guest Lamar Alexander will present the award to Haley's family.
Each Heroes of Southern Appalachia award is presented to a person of Southern Appalachian heritage, who embodies the spirit of the region with characteristics of perseverance, fortitude, self-reliance, and service. The accomplishments of each recipient have brought greater awareness and understanding of Appalachian culture.
